Dozens of young people – including those with special educational needs and disabilities – will now be able to take part in free football sessions to boost fitness levels and build their confidence.

A funding boost from North Lincolnshire Council means the Iron Foundation can run 31 weeks of open sessions for 11 to 19-year-olds, and up to age 24 for young people with SEND.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “This initiative is a fantastic opportunity for young people in Scunthorpe to stay active, learn new skills and connect with others in a safe and supportive environment.

“We know how important these things are for our communities – giving young people somewhere positive to go, something purposeful to do and people they can rely on.”

The weekly sessions, Iron Goals Football, held at Appleby Frodingham Sports and Social Club in Scunthorpe, offer 50 places coached by experienced staff. The programme gives young people the chance to:

  • Stay active and improve physical health
  • Build confidence, friendships and life skills
  • Take part in fun, structured sport in a safe environment
  • Access positive activities proven to reduce anti-social behaviour

The cash comes from North Lincolnshire Council’s grants programme which provides flexible support to the people and groups who make the towns and villages great places to live.

The fund backs projects that bring residents together, create opportunities for young people, celebrate local talent, and keep vital community spaces active and open.

Since 2011, the grant programme has invested in hundreds of grassroots initiatives – from sport and culture to local events, youth activities, training and volunteering – responding to what residents say matters most in their communities.

Support is available for community organisations, charities, co-operatives, youth groups, and individuals showing promise in sport, arts or culture, with help also offered for keeping venues open and accessible. It is one programme with many routes in – all focused on enriching community life.
