Elections and voting information

Voter ID

The Elections Act 2022 saw the introduction of Voter ID. This means that residents will need to show photo ID at polling stations before they can receive their ballot paper.

Accepted forms of ID include:

  • UK, European and Commonwealth passports
  • UK or European drivers’ licences
  • Some concessionary travel passes, such as an older person’s bus pass
  • The new free Voter Authority Certificate

The full list of accepted ID and how to apply for a free voter ID is available on the Electoral Commission website.

Voters will be able to use expired ID if they are still recognisable from the photo. A private area will be available at the polling station so a voter can choose to have their photo ID viewed in private if they like.

Polling cards

Although everyone who is registered to vote should receive a polling card before election day, as long as you are registered to vote, and you know where your polling station is, you do not need your card.

You do not need to take your polling card with you to be able to vote unless you are an anonymous elector.

If you need to check that you are registered to vote, please contact us.
