Transport for students aged 16 to 19 to college or sixth form

Covid 19 has impacted heavily on all areas of our lives including school and college, and the next academic year will be challenging for us in different ways. In order to give choice and control to students and families in regards to their transport needs we will provide colleges with a travel grant to enable flexible transport options.

If you are applying to a college or school sixth form to continue your education post 16 you may be eligible for a travel grant of £315 (£105 per term) from the council to help with your transport costs.

Depending on where you study, your college or sixth form may add a further £105 (£35 per term), making a total of £420 per year.

The eligibility rules are given in more detail below.

To apply for the grant you should contact the college or sixth form you will be studying at.

Students who are unable to travel independently either by public transport or on foot, should read the information on the Post 16 transport for students with special educational needs and disabilities to college or sixth form page.

If you wish to apply for support to travel outside North Lincolnshire, please contact the Transport Team on 01724 297218 or school.transport@northlincs.gov.uk

The course of study must be a further education course at a publicly funded institution. Students attending work based learning programmes must apply to their employer for transport support.

It is possible for nearly all students who live in North Lincolnshire to pursue their intended career path by attending a course at a college or school sixth form in North Lincolnshire.

The council’s policy is therefore not to provide transport support for attending a course outside North Lincolnshire apart from in the following circumstance:

  • If the course is unavailable in North Lincolnshire and is essential to the student’s career progression. If there is a course in North Lincolnshire (which may not be exactly the same as the student’s preferred course elsewhere) that provides the student with the same opportunity to follow a higher education course or entry criteria for their chosen career, transport support will not be provided to the course elsewhere.

The distance from home to the out-of-area college should be no more than 25 miles (except for students with learning difficulties and disabilities whose placement has been agreed by the council, and it is the nearest suitable course).

If the college you are proposing to attend provides its own transport that it is reasonable for students living in North Lincolnshire to use, you will not be eligible to receive any support from North Lincolnshire Council.

Residence

You must be living in North Lincolnshire when you are enrolled on the course.

Anyone who moves to North Lincolnshire for the purpose of receiving full-time education may not be eligible for support from North Lincolnshire Council.

Three year limit

Unless you have special education needs or disabilities and are eligible for support under the post 16 SEND transport policy, we will only give support for a maximum of three years.

Age

You must be under 19 years old on 31 August before the start of your course.

Distance

You must live more than three miles walking distance from the school sixth form or college.
