People can take a walk down memory lane at the latest exhibition set to launch at North Lincolnshire Museum on Friday 10 January 2020.

Scunthorpe Memories 10 Year Anniversary Exhibition will celebrate 10 years of the Facebook group ‘Scunthorpe Memories’.  It will be on display until Friday 14 February 2020.

The group – that now has almost 20,000 members from all over the world – was created to encourage people to share old photographs, memories and stories of Scunthorpe and surrounding villages.

At the exhibition, visitors will see a display of the most memorable photographs that have been shared in the group over the past decade. There will also be never before seen photographs from the founder’s personal collection.

“Paul Stebbing, founder of Scunthorpe Memories, said:

“I set up the Scunthorpe Memories Facebook group in January 2010 on returning to live in the town after a decade away. Being back in my birthplace, I suddenly caught up on a wave of nostalgia. I started to share my photographs and memories of growing up in Scunthorpe in the 1980s – including the clock in the town centre; long gone shops such as Prestos and Pennywise; and the annual Scunthorpe Gala. It soon became apparent that others wanted to do the same and over a thousand people joined in just a few days. The group continued to grow and we started to arrange talks, reunions and social events.

“Now, a decade on, the group is approaching its 10th birthday, and we have almost 20,000 members from all across the world. It’s important to me and to the members to celebrate this milestone, and we are incredibly grateful to North Lincolnshire Museum for offering to help us mark it by exhibiting a small selection of iconic local photographs that have been uploaded to the group over the years. These will be accompanied by a few, never seen before images.

“We’d like to see the group grow and evolve over the next few years and we hope to continue to work in partnership with the museum to capture and celebrate our town’s history and heritage.”

Cllr David Rose, cabinet member for Children, Families and Culture, said:

“I am looking forward to seeing this exhibition on show at North Lincolnshire Museum; it is a fantastic idea. Scunthorpe Memories is a community group that gives people the opportunity to share their memories and photographs with local people but also showcases North Lincolnshire to a wider audience.

“North Lincolnshire has a varied history and our towns and villages have changed a lot over the years. This exhibition allows visitors to take a trip down memory lane or for the younger generation to learn more about where they live.”
