A new boardwalk at Waters’ Edge Visitor Centre in Barton – now open to the public – is giving residents and visitors a better way to enjoy one of North Lincolnshire’s most popular natural spaces – and is the ideal place to walk off the excesses of Christmas.
Completed over the summer, the £77,000 investment has created an accessible, durable route through the reserve, improving links between the visitor centre, walking trails and key viewpoints across the wetlands.
The boardwalk makes it easier for people of all ages and abilities to get outside, stay active and enjoy fresh air over the winter months – whether that’s a gentle post-Christmas stroll, a dog walk, or a longer trek taking in the surrounding nature reserve.
Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Waters’ Edge is one of our most valued outdoor spaces, and this new boardwalk makes it even more welcoming and accessible.
“At a time of year when many people are looking for simple ways to get moving, clear their heads and enjoy the outdoors, this investment helps more residents do exactly that – right on their doorstep.”
The project was funded by Government and is part of the council’s part of ongoing investment in parks, open spaces and visitor attractions that support healthier lifestyles, tourism and the local economy.
Cllr Christine Patterson, cabinet member for healthy lives and places, said: “Small, everyday choices like going for a walk make a real difference to people’s health and wellbeing. This new boardwalk removes barriers and makes it easier for more people to get outside, be active and enjoy nature, especially at a time of year when that fresh air and movement really matter.
“Investments like this are about creating places that support healthier lives naturally, whether that’s a short winter stroll, walking the dog, or simply taking time out in a peaceful setting.”
Waters’ Edge Visitor Centre remains open throughout the winter, offering refreshments, facilities and a warm welcome for walkers, families and nature lovers exploring the reserve. Keep up to date on everything that is happening on the Waters’ Edge Facebook page.
