The £1.5m transformation of Baysgarth Leisure Centre in Barton into a community facility is progressing well.

North Lincolnshire Council is enabling residents to access a range of services under one roof by bringing them together in the new centre that is expected to open in May 2019.

Work started in summer 2018 and since then the steel structure has been erected, the office has been relocated and the new reception counter is in place.

The investment in the centre includes:

  • A purpose-built library
  • Customer information and advice area
  • Specific facilities for health and wellbeing support
  • Internet café with enhanced refreshment facilities
  • Improved self-service and Wi-Fi access
  • Extended car park to accommodate more customers
  • Comprehensive, high quality leisure facilities

The new facility will improve and expand services on offer in the Barton area. Integration of services will allow for greater access and flexibility.

In addition to this most recent investment, the council invested £80,000 in a new modern health suite at the leisure centre that opened in September 2018. It is located poolside and includes an eight person sauna, six person steam room and a cold drench shower.

Cllr Richard Hannigan, cabinet member for adults, health and wellbeing, said:

“This significant investment will benefit residents of Barton and surrounding areas. The new community facility is an extension onto the existing Baysgarth Leisure Centre, creating a one-stop shop for a range of services in the beautiful setting of Baysgarth Park.

“Residents of all ages will be able to access everything from leisure and health services to job opportunities and study/research provision. There will also be a children’s library reading area, early years and parent reading and information and advice on a whole range of things.

“We’ve had fantastic feedback from members who use the new sauna and steam room alongside the existing leisure facilities. They are now eagerly awaiting the next phase of the development to be completed.”
