Councillor Janet Lee
Cllr Janet Lee has been elected as the 30th Mayor of North Lincolnshire. She was elected in a ceremony at the Council’s Annual Meeting on the 14 May 2026.
Cllr Janet Lee married into a local farming family in 1980 who had lived for many years at Castlethorpe and was married in the local church at Broughton St Mary’s. Cllr Lee had previously lived and was schooled in Grimsby and completed her Personal Assistant course with honours at Grimsby Technology College and worked for a local Estate Agent Jackson, Green & Preston before moving to Castlethorpe.
Cllr Lee was a distinguished breaststroke swimmer in her early teenage years and represented her county and her country. Cllr Lee also managed to swim the Humber when she was only 12 years old.
On Cllr Lee’s move to Castlethorpe she took some time off work to raise her 3 daughters. As they were getting a little older at local primary school Cllr Lee returned part time to work, firstly working for Fieldside Mushrooms at North Kelsey, and then moving to work for the NFU Mutual in Brigg, which turned into full time work. After a few years Cllr Lee moved to work for a company called IAT Ltd at Goxhill, who built aquariums, and dealt with water filtration in the UK and worldwide. The firm moved to Anglesey to open a land-based fish farm which was sold on to a Welsh Firm as IAT moved to Nova Scotia in Canada.
At this stage Cllr Lee joined Lincolnshire County Council, for the first two years working in the Director of Education’s Office as a third PA. After this Cllr Lee joined the commencement of the School Admissions Team in Lincolnshire County Council where she worked for the rest of her career serving another 26 years. One of Cllr Lee’s biggest jobs was presenting Appeals on behalf of Lincolnshire Primary and Secondary Schools and retired in July 2025.
Cllr Lee was elected as Ward Councillor for Broughton and Appleby Ward, which is now Broughton and Scawby Ward in May 2021 and became a Broughton Town Councillor at the same time.
Cllr Lee is an active member within the Council and has served as the Chair of the Governance Scrutiny Committee and currently is a member of the Children’s Scrutiny Panel, the Health & Care Integration & Performance Scrutiny Panel and the Chair of the School Transport Appeals Team.
Cllr Lee’s Mayoral Chaplin will be the Reverand David Eames the vicar of Broughton St Mary’s Church and Scawby, St Hybald’s Church. Cllr Lee’s chosen charities that will benefit during her year of office will be Hope House – Scunthorpe Supporting families affected by Cancer and bereavement, and the North Lincolnshire MacMillan Nurses Organisation.
