Road and path surface problems

Maintenance programme

We carry out regular inspections and surveys on our 871 miles (1,402 km) of roads and 596 miles (960 km) of pavements.

  • Safety inspections – monthly, every three months or yearly
  • Service inspections – every four, six or 12 months, depending on the asset type
  • Condition surveys – yearly

We use the results to plan and prioritise a programme of planned work, that makes the best use of council funds.

Planned work

In the last 12 months, we fixed more than 3,000 potholes and resurfaced 33 miles of roads:

  • 4.7 miles of A-roads
  • 6 miles of B-roads
  • 9.8 miles of C-roads
  • 12.6 miles of unclassified roads

This is work that is carefully planned to make the best use of our resources.  The different inspections and surveys we do, and reports we get from members of the public, help us make a plan for which projects to do.

This plan is regularly updated to reflect changes in priority, budgets and risk.
