On Monday 27 January, the Mayor of North Lincolnshire Cllr Janet Longcake is hosting a ceremony in Scunthorpe to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day 2025.

Cllr Longcake will be joined by school pupils and guests from across North Lincolnshire in the Chamber Lecture Theatre at the University Campus North Lincolnshire (UCNL) on Ashby Road at 3.45pm for a 4pm start.

The theme for this year is ‘for a better future’ and the mayor is extending an invitation to all local people to join her at the ceremony and to lay a stone in memory of the millions of people who lost their lives in the Holocaust.

This Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp complex, and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.

Eighty years after the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, we must become the generations who carry forward the legacy of the witnesses, remember those who were murdered and challenge those who would distort or deny the past, or who discriminate and persecute today. We can all mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2025 and commit to making a better future for us all.

St Barnabas’ Church of England Primary School Choir from Barnetby will officially open and close the ceremony with a song and other local school children will read poems.

Holocaust Memorial Day brings together people from different faiths and backgrounds to remember the victims of the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

If you would like to attend the ceremony, please call the Civic Office on 01724 296346 to reserve a place.
