Thousands of people descended on Normanby Hall Country Park on Saturday as North Lincolnshire’s biggest ever Armed Forces Day celebration attracted almost 10,000 visitors.

The event brought together serving personnel, veterans, cadets, military families and residents for a day of remembrance, recognition and community celebration as part of the new-look Armed Forces Day Festival.

Held at Normanby Hall for the first time, the festival is built around Armed Forces Day – a national event celebrated to commemorate the service of men and women in the British Armed Forces.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “What we saw at Normanby Hall was something special. Nearly 10,000 people came together to celebrate and support our Armed Forces community, making this the biggest Armed Forces event we have ever hosted in North Lincolnshire.

“The atmosphere throughout the day was incredible. Families, veterans, serving personnel, cadets and residents all came together to enjoy a great day out while recognising the service and sacrifice of those who have served our country.

“North Lincolnshire has a proud and longstanding connection with the Armed Forces. The turnout demonstrated just how much respect and gratitude exists in communities across North Lincolnshire.

“I would like to thank everyone who attended, all the volunteers who gave their time, our exhibitors, partners and organisers who helped make the festival such a success. Moving the event to Normanby Hall has given us the space and opportunity to create something even bigger for the future.

“Supporting our Armed Forces community matters. We promised to invest in important events that bring people together and celebrate the things that make our communities strong. The response from residents shows just how valued this event is.”

Featuring military displays, living history exhibits, live entertainment, family activities, community organisations and a packed programme of attractions throughout the day, the Armed Forces Festival also provided an opportunity for residents to show their support for the Armed Forces community and recognise the contribution they make to local communities and the nation.

Cllr Elaine Marper, cabinet member for customer services, is the council’s armed forces champion. She said: “The Armed Forces Day Festival was a wonderful celebration of the people who serve, have served and continue to support our Armed Forces community.

“It was particularly heartening to see so many veterans, military families and young people enjoying the day together. Events like this help strengthen the connection between our communities and the Armed Forces while ensuring that service and sacrifice are never forgotten.

“Thank you to everyone who came along and helped create such a positive and welcoming atmosphere. The support shown throughout the day was incredible.”

The success of the festival follows the council’s continued commitment to supporting serving personnel, veterans and military families through the Armed Forces Covenant and the recently enhanced Armed Forces Hub, which provides advice, support and community connections throughout the year.
