A new health initiative is making waves across North Lincolnshire, aiming to combat one of the UK’s most dangerous yet often undetected health threats – high blood pressure.
The project is a collaborative effort between North Lincolnshire Council, the Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, and local GPs and healthcare partners. Together, they’re working to raise awareness of the risks associated with high blood pressure and make it easier than ever for residents to get checked for free.
Often dubbed the “silent killer,” high blood pressure rarely shows symptoms but can lead to devastating outcomes if left untreated, including heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, and vascular dementia.
Since the project’s launch, more than 750 residents have already taken advantage of the free checks. Many were found to have elevated readings and were immediately offered tailored advice, lifestyle guidance, and referrals to local support services.
Council leader, Cllr Rob Waltham said: “We’re proud to support this initiative, which is already making a real difference in our communities.
“The fact that so many people have come forward for checks, and received the support they need, shows the power of local partnerships in action.
“The project is about more than just numbers – it’s about empowering communities and together, we’re building a healthier, stronger North Lincolnshire.”
North Lincolnshire Council is now inviting local businesses and community groups to get involved. Free training and equipment are available for those who want to help deliver blood pressure checks in their own neighbourhoods.

Dr Anam Abrar, prevention lead for North Lincolnshire, shared an expert insight and said: “High blood pressure affects one in three adults in the UK, yet many don’t even know they have it. Early detection is key and can dramatically reduce the risk of life-threatening cardiovascular conditions.
“Through the CVD Outreach Project, we’re proactively reaching out to vulnerable and high-risk individuals across North Lincolnshire, offering free blood pressure checks to people over 40 – right on their doorsteps.
“With an estimated 150,000 people across Humber and North Yorkshire living with undiagnosed high blood pressure, this initiative is a vital step toward early detection and timely intervention.
“We’re excited about the impact this project can have – not just in diagnosing and educating, but in protecting our communities from preventable diseases.”
Cllr Chris Patterson, cabinet member for healthy lives, healthy places, added: “This project is a fantastic example of how we can bring vital health services directly to the people who need them most.
“My blood pressure became slightly raised two years ago and I was informed of ways to reduce it. I followed the professional advice and now my blood pressure is what it was when I was young. I think this programme will be an excellent way of raising awareness to so many people, like me, who are totally unaware that they have high blood pressure.
“By making blood pressure checks more accessible, we’re helping residents take control of their health and prevent serious conditions before they start. It’s about creating a culture of prevention and wellbeing across North Lincolnshire.”
