Healthy Hearts project

The North Lincolnshire Healthy Hearts project is on a mission to reduce the risk of heart-related illnesses across the county by offering free blood pressure checks in local communities.

What we do

We travel to community drop-ins, groups, and events to provide:

  • Free blood pressure checks. Visit LiveWell North Lincolnshire to find out where we are visiting near you.
  • Advice on your blood pressure reading and what it means
  • Support and guidance for small, healthy lifestyle changes.

Getting checked is simple

Take time to check your Blood Pressure this Know Your Numbers week (8 – 14 September 2025).

Know Your Numbers week is the UK’s biggest community blood pressure checking and awareness raising campaign, aiming to reach those who are unaware they are living with high blood pressure, so they can get the treatment and support needed to bring it under control.

High blood pressure is often dubbed the “silent killer,” rarely showing symptoms but can lead to devastating outcomes if left untreated, including heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, and vascular dementia.

North Lincolnshire Council Healthy Hearts project has teamed up with Citizen’s Advice North Lincolnshire to upskill the Ironstone Centre volunteer workforce as Blood Pressure Ambassadors. The team are ready and eager to offer opportunity for community members to get their blood pressure checked for free and help them to understand their blood pressure reading.

Want to host a blood pressure check event?

We’re always keen to team up with local communities. If you are organising an event that’s going to attract the over 40’s and would like to offer blood pressure checks please get in touch with harry.palmer@northlincs.gov.uk to see if we can support you or if you would like to be able to offer blood pressure checks yourself, read on to learn more about our Blood Pressure Ambassador Scheme.

Become a Blood Pressure Ambassador

People from all walks of life across North Lincolnshire are getting involved as Blood Pressure Ambassadors – and you can too! It’s a simple way to make a big difference in your community by helping others check and understand their blood pressure. While we focus on checking people over 40, as they are at higher risk, you’re also welcome to take blood pressure readings for younger people.

You don’t need to be a health expert. We welcome everyone – whether you’re working, retired, part of a local group, a local business or just want to do something positive in your area.

Training is free, quick and easy, taking just one hour. We’ll give you all the knowledge, skills, and resources you need to feel confident.

Once trained, you’ll be able to offer free blood pressure checks to members of the public at events, in your workplace, or with family, friends, and neighbours. It’s a great way to support others, meet new people, and help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke across North Lincolnshire.

What causes high blood pressure?

Often, there’s no clear cause, but it’s usually linked to diet, lifestyle, or medical conditions. It can run in families and worsen with age.

High blood pressure often shows no signs, so many people do not know they have it until they are in hospital after a heart attack or stroke.

If your blood pressure stays high, even at rest, it is time to act and protect yourself.

High blood pressure is serious. Ignoring it can lead to heart and circulatory problems like heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, vision issues, and vascular dementia.

Simple lifestyle changes can help you to take control of your blood pressure. Talk to our member of our team to find out more about local opportunities.

What you can do
