Residents given even more choice on garden waste

North Lincolnshire Council is introducing a new scheme to give residents even more choice on the collection of garden waste.

People can now choose to have a larger bin for garden waste – up from 140 litres to 240 litres – an increase of more than 70 percent. This enhanced service only costs £39 a year for collecting the bigger bin.

For people with larger gardens this will reduce the need to travel to household waste recycling sites, reducing their carbon footprint.

Thousands of residents have also taken advantage of the flexibility to downsize their domestic waste bin and increase the size of their garden waste bin free of charge, an option which has proved popular over a number of years.

The new scheme follows the successful launch of providing free compost bins to replace garden waste bins. Almost 400 people have signed up for a new composter under the Grow Don’t Throw scheme.

Residents now have three choices on garden waste – replace the bin with a composter, opt for a larger garden waste bin for a small charge, or stick with their current bin.

Cllr Rob Waltham, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said:

“This is fundamentally about two things; protecting the environment and offering residents a choice as to what best suits their needs. The existing 140 litre brown scheme will remain free of charge, making us one of the only councils in the county to provide a free universal garden waste collection service.

“We’ve seen in the last few months the overwhelming community response to protecting each other against Covid-19 – the response was based on lots of us doing small things which collectively make a big difference.

“The message holds true when it comes to ensuring we protect the environment for generations to come. We know some people can compost at home, we know some people really value the existing garden waste collection and we know for others this enhanced service will make a big difference.”

Cllr David Rose, cabinet member for the environment at North Lincolnshire Council, said:

“Our commitment to protecting and enhancing the environment of North Lincolnshire is for the residents who live here today but also for our children tomorrow. The charge at £39 is competitive and only recovers the council’s costs for providing the additional service.

“We continue to make great strides, reducing our carbon footprint while enhancing the places and spaces of North Lincolnshire. This latest offer for residents is just one of many measures we are implementing to enable our communities to flourish.”
