A successful scheme to help young people travel to work or training has joined the green revolution – with low cost, electric scooters now available to hire.

Young people who need support to make the journey to work or training can now rent one of ten new electric scooters from North Lincolnshire Council.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “This is yet another fantastic example demonstrating our commitment to green transport initiatives.

“This will make a big difference today to the people who can now access these fantastic new scooters. It will also having a lasting impact in the future to the environment of North Lincolnshire.”

The Wheels2Work scheme has helped more than 140 people of all ages and backgrounds from all over North Lincolnshire to get to work or training. The new electric mopeds have joined the 20 petrol mopeds currently in the fleet.

Cllr Julie Reed, cabinet member for children and families, said: “Being unable to get to and from work or training can be a real barrier for young people. The Wheels2Work scheme has helped remove this barrier and opened up more opportunities, especially for those living in more rural areas.

“Many young people are passionate about the environment and the new electric mopeds will allow them to get to the places they need and at the same time reduce their carbon footprint.”

Scunthorpe MP Holly Mumby-Croft, who attended the launch, said: “This is exactly the type of scheme that councils should be supporting. We are lucky that North Lincolnshire Council is at the forefront of supporting green transport for young people and also helping them connect with training and employment opportunities.

“I was particularly impressed that the scheme includes all of the safety and security kit and arranges the maintenance too. I hope that lots of young people take up the offer.”

The scooters can be rented for as little as £60 per month. This payment includes everything needed to get young people on the road, including:

• A new or used fully taxed and serviced 50cc, 125cc petrol or electric moped
• Comprehensive insurance
• Breakdown support
• Servicing and maintenance
• Security lock
• Helmet, gloves and a high-vis vest

The 50cc electric moped has a 40 mile range and the 125cc a 60 mile range. They can be fully charged up overnight.
