Scunthorpe town centre is the place to be on Wednesday 28 August when it will be brought to life with the End of Summer Extravaganza from 10am to 4pm.
For parents looking for something to do to keep the children entertained before they go back to school, this is the perfect day out.
Whilst buying last minute back to school items in the town centre, families will be able to get involved in all the extravaganza fun.
There will be a range of free family fun activities taking place in St John’s Market as well as along Jubilee Way, Cole Street and the High Street, that will be sure to keep little ones happy.
There will be entertainment including live music throughout the day.
St John’s Market will have a bowling alley, old fashioned games such as bean bag throw and there will be a range of pop-up stalls including:
- North Lincolnshire Healthy Lifestyle Service providing health advice and health related activities.
- Ongo will be providing advice and have a range of activities taking place.
- Fostering and Adoption will be on hand to speak to any potential foster carers or adoptive parents.
- Family Information Service will be providing information on things to do in North Lincolnshire and advice on services.
- Children’s University will be running a range of activities.
- Scunthorpe Pony Club – offering information on how to get involved in horse riding and games for families.
On Cole Street, the waste and recycling team will have a compost safari. People can look at the mini beasts living in a home compost bin with magnifying glasses and gloves. Children can also make their own wormery to take home.
20-21 Visual Arts Centre and North Lincolnshire Museum will have a range of free interactive activities for families to take part in.
At 20-21 join in ARTivities. This free fun and creative workshop is suitable for all the family. They can make something creative based on current exhibitions to take home. Exhibitions include:
- Human Machines exhibition, a series of interactive installations addressing the theme of the human condition. It includes sculpture, traditional engineering, metalsmithing techniques and contemporary electro mechanics.
- Mythomania exhibition, artist Ian Kirkpatrick uses graphic and packaging design software to produce large scale sculpture and 2D artwork using a variety of hard and soft materials. It aims to show how myth is still a vital force of today’s culture.
Explore the Animals at Home exhibition at the museum. Discover three iconic local habitats: the Humber Wetlands, Ancient Woodlands and Coversands Heathland. Get up close to taxidermy birds and beast from the museum’s collections.
Dudley’s Den is providing free make and take sessions for children aged five and under. It is based on the Animals at Home exhibition.
At 12.30pm a mascot race will be taking place on Jubilee Way. Mark the Market Meerkat, Ongo Bear and Bill the Burglar will be amongst the mascots taking part and battling it out to be crowned the mascot champion.
Outside St John’s Market Scunthorpe Lions will have activities for families to get involved in.
Humberside Fire and Rescue Service and Humberside Police will display a number of vehicles on Cole Street for you to have a look around and have your photograph taken by.
And if that is not enough, Dowse’s Fair will be on the High Street with a number of popular fairground rides to keep everyone entertained.
The Deputy Mayor of North Lincolnshire, Cllr Peter Clark and the Young Mayor, Levi Bonnett will open the event at St John’s Market.
Cllr Richard Hannigan, cabinet member for place shaping is encouraging families to visit Scunthorpe town centre for the extravaganza, he said:
“As the end of the summer holiday approaches, it is the time when families start to prepare for children going back to school. The extravaganza is the opportunity for families to get involved in a range of free fun and interesting activities whilst shopping in the town centre.”
