North Lincolnshire Council has helped deliver a major energy upgrade at St Bede’s Catholic Voluntary Academy in Scunthorpe, with 238 solar panels now installed on the school’s roof.

The 104kWh system is expected to significantly reduce electricity bills, allowing the school to redirect thousands of pounds each year into supporting pupils – from classroom resources to extracurricular opportunities.

The project is part of a wider council-backed initiative to install solar panels on schools and public buildings across the region, delivered in partnership with North Lincolnshire Community Energy.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “This is about making smart choices that benefit our young people. Lower energy costs mean more money can be invested directly into education, helping pupils thrive.”

Dave Burrough, director of estates and facilities at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Multi-Academy Trust, added: “This installation gives St Bede’s greater control over its energy spend and supports our wider goal of reducing reliance on fossil fuels across the Trust.”

Cllr David Rose, cabinet member for environment and strategy, said: “We’re proud to support projects that deliver real value for schools – financially and educationally – while also improving energy efficiency.”
