New homes, office space and an ultra-modern library will be built in the heart of Scunthorpe under plans to fast-track town centre development, boosting the local economy further.

The flagship development – which will be co-developed with a commercial partner- was at the heart of the council’s budget setting meeting where a below-inflation increase was agreed.

A small rise of 1.99 per cent in general council tax was confirmed, alongside the adult social care precept increase of 1.75 per cent.

Two-thirds of North Lincolnshire households will pay less than 92p a week more.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Through the last year we have made major strides in our firm commitment to improving outcomes for everyone in North Lincolnshire.

“The Government has backed the communities across North Lincolnshire with tens of millions of pounds to create a new future, and we will continue to build on that. It is important to remember that the majority of the money we spend comes from Government.

“We have backed a small increase this year and have detailed plans for how we will use that money to ensure residents see improvements to their lives.

“We’re backing schools with extra cash, we’re supporting more free swimming sessions, recommitting to giving every child a free book every month until their fifth birthday and increasing the community grant funding.

“Alongside this, we’re committing to planting more trees and backing families to thrive with further investment in the family hubs network.

“We have a budget that is inclusive, a budget that works, embraces diversity and supports equality here in North Lincolnshire, a budget that keeps our promise to keep council tax as low as possible, whilst serving the needs of everyone that needs support.

“It is a budget that regenerates North Lincolnshire, makes employment and better paid jobs a priority, delivers on investment and listens to local people and their concerns.”
