Through the Northern Lincolnshire Broadband project, we’ve seen 95 per cent of people and places in North Lincolnshire get connected up to superfast broadband  – and we’re working on the rest.

The Northern Lincolnshire Broadband Project is striving to extend the availability of Next Generation Access (NGA) broadband infrastructure in North Lincolnshire.

As part of the project, we have published our Phase 3 State Aid Public Consultation document. This consultation closed on the 25 November 2019.

Outcome of the public consultation

A Public Consultation to determine and validate the Intervention Area for North Lincolnshire Council procurement for Phase 3 of the Northern Lincolnshire Broadband programme closed on 25 November 2019.

The Public Consultation followed an Open Market Review (OMR) with the telecoms market to which suppliers responded with information on their existing infrastructure and commercial plans in the project area.

Supermarket shopping online, downloading films and music, researching family heritage, speaking to friends and family far away or just catching up on missed TV, the internet is fast becoming the centre of daily activity – enabling families and individuals to conduct their day-to-day lives from the comfort of their homes.

The problem is, traditional copper wire internet connections often can’t cope with our modern day demands on it, making internet connections slower and hindering us from completing the activity we set out to do. With fibre broadband the internet connection is much faster to begin with enabling you to do more and achieve things quicker, so even if it slows up a little it’s much less of an issue.

The majority of properties in North Lincolnshire can already access superfast broadband. To see if you can, have a look on the availability checker.

What is ‘superfast’ broadband?

Superfast broadband refers to broadband connections of at least 30Mbps. Superfast connections let you browse the internet, download music or video, and stream television at speeds that are massively higher than most internet users.

Fibre to the home, or fibre to the cabinet?

Fibre to the home means the fibre optic cable reaches all the way from your internet service provider, right to your home or business. No copper telephone lines are being used anywhere in the connection, meaning internet speeds of up to 1Gbps.

Fibre to the cabinet means that the fibre cable goes from your provider to a green street cabinet near your home. Your home is then connected to the cabinet through copper telephone lines. These copper cables aren’t as good at transporting data, so fibre to the cabinet connections are slightly  slower overall than full fibre to the home connections.

Millions of UK homes and businesses can already get great broadband speeds of up to 80Mps through fibre to the cabinet. Your speed will depend on things like how close you are to the cabinet. Your broadband provider will tell you what speed you can expect to receive when you place an order.

By having fibre broadband, not only will you be able to benefit from faster upload and download speeds. You can also run meetings by video link and reach customers through new, faster, and easier to track methods of communication like Facebook and Twitter. Alongside programmes such as cloud based Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems, with high speed fibre broadband you can access the same tools as larger companies – with the same benefits, but for a fraction of the cost.
