Burials and cremation frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

There are many things to think about when someone we love passes away. The information below is to help answer some common questions you might have about burials and cremations. Please also see our main Burials and Cremations in North Lincolnshire webpage.

Can I scatter someone’s ashes that haven’t been cremated at Woodlands?

Yes, you can; we make a charge for this service as it ensures not only your loved one being recorded in our registers, but the fee is also put towards the upkeep of our beautiful grounds. Being recorded in the register, also enables future generations the ability to find loved ones when completing genealogy searches.

If you would like to do this, please telephone the Bereavement Services office, who will be able to take your payment and make the appointment for you.

We have dedicated Garden of Remembrance, a number of scattering lawns, as well as rockery beds.

Can I scatter ashes on my own?

We ask anyone wishing to scatter cremated remains, does so with our permission. The scattering of cremated remains is only permitted at Woodlands Crematorium, within designated areas.

Witnessing a scattering enables us to record the location of the scattering, which in turn will enable future generations the ability to find loved ones when completing genealogy searches.

Funeral Directors are also able to carry out scatterings with you, or on your behalf.

Can I personalise the area where I have scattered?

The simple answer to this, is no. It is important to understand that over the years, many people have chosen the scattering lawns at Woodlands because of our natural environment, where visitors come for quiet solace and contemplation. Allowing one family to personalise their space, may in fact upset another who may have family in the same area. If we receive complaints about an over personalised area, we may take action and remove any offending items.

Can I scatter ashes on a grave?

North Lincolnshire Council does not allow the scattering of cremated remains upon a grave; this ensures that the grave is available to be used for either full coffin burials, or the interment of cremated remains in the future.

What are my choices in North Lincolnshire?

When someone dies, we offer families the choice of either a burial or cremation.

North Lincolnshire Council is responsible for eight cemeteries throughout the county, as well as Woodlands Crematorium.

There are a number of small cemeteries within the area that are managed by Town and Parish Councils. For information about these, you will need to contact the appropriate Town Clerk should this be what you want.

What are the different types of service you offer?

We offer three types of service:

  • A Direct service, is one which is unattended services (it should be noted that we do not permit any attendance inside the building).
  • A Simple service offers a 10-minute use of our chapel, a holding image and a piece of entry and exit music. This allows families a period to reflect without the need to appoint a minister or celebrant.
  • A Full service offers a 40-minute use of our chapel, a holding image as well as a range of music options. We ask that within that time, you allow five minutes for entry and five minutes egress from the chapel.

Services may be extended in increments of 20 minutes subject to availability.

For Simple and Full services, we have a modern computerised media system which provides almost any music choice that is requested as well as allowing families to personalise the service with a tribute (including video tributes).

A live web-streaming service is available, which can also be recorded should a family request this. In this digital age, recordings are provided with either a downloadable link or via USB. Live-streaming and visual tributes are additional costs and not included in the fee; please refer to our fees and charges.

How many people can come to a funeral held in Woodlands Chapel?

We have seating for approximately 92 mourners plus ample standing room inside; a maximum of 240 people are permitted inside the building.

Service can be relayed outside via speakers for large attendances.

How long will it be before floral tributes are removed from the patio?

Floral tributes remain displayed on the Flower Terrace for a minimum of two working days.

How personal can I make the funeral service?

Funerals nowadays offer a much more personal touch, with families wanting more input than in the past. We will always try and accommodate a family’s wish.

What about music?

Working closely with your appointed Funeral Director, families are able to select a variety of music options, this can include specialist recordings.

As a guide, we would suggest you choose three pieces of music.

  • A special piece of music to be played as the coffin enters the building and congregation are being seated.
  • A contemplation piece, families may include a piece of music to be played during the service that has a special meaning.
  • A final piece of music for when the congregation leaves the chapel.

It is also particularly poignant to have a quiet piece of music played as the curtains close, a moment of reflection; discuss your requirements with your chosen Minister/Celebrant.

Hymns are often replaced with the equivalent recorded music.

Can I play a video or have photographs displayed?

We have a facility within the Chapel whereby a single holding image can be displayed throughout the service; holding images are free of charge. Speak to your Funeral Director to ensure photographs are uploaded to our media provider.

You can also choose a selection of photographs, or a small clip of a family video, which can displayed during the service (and chosen to coincide with middle piece of music); please refer to our price list for the current fees for the visual tributes.

Can I play the organ?

We have an organ in the chapel which families members/friends may choose to play during the service. Unfortunately, we no longer offer the services of a professional organist.

Do you have hymn books?

We no longer provide hymn books and would advise families to include any hymn lyrics, psalms, prayers, special poems etc. to be included within an order of service.

Can I put anything inside a coffin?

When a family choose a cremation service, we ask that you work closely with your appointed Funeral Director and discuss the items which are not permitted inside a coffin; they have a comprehensive list of what is and what isn’t allowed.

For burial services, you can put almost anything inside the coffin.

Can I record a funeral?

At Woodlands Crematorium we have the facility to either live stream the service, or record as a digital format. Please let your Funeral Director know if you wish us to record the service, we are unable to provide a recording after the event. All media services are provided by a third party, so please refer to our price list for the current fees and charges.

What is an Exclusive Right of Burial (A Grave Deed)?

Primarily, an Exclusive Eight of Burial, allows the owner of the Deed to be buried in the grave. They can also give their permission for others to be buried, but only in their life time. Once a grave owner has passed away, the Exclusive Right of Burial will need to be passed to another living person in order for the grave to be used again. The owner of an Exclusive Right of Burial can also apply for a memorial to be erected on to the grave (or an added inscription to an existing memorial on the grave).

Can I purchase an Exclusive Right of Burial before I die?

Yes you can. An Exclusive Right of Burial can be pre-purchased by visiting out website, or contacting the office. Graves are issued in rotation, so it may not be possible to choose a grave in an unmarked section of the cemetery. Once you have purchased your grave, you will be issued with a Grave Deed which will need to be presented when using the grave.

Can an Exclusive Right of Burial be transferred to someone else?

An Exclusive Right of Burial can be transferred in a number of ways, depending upon the circumstance:

  1. Whilst the owner is alive, they are able to transfer the Right to anyone they wish. This is completed by ways of an Assignment.
  2. If the owner has passed away, and they had a Will or a Grant of Probate, the Exclusive Right of Burial forms part of their estate and as such the transfer would be made to whoever was granted Probate. If Probate was not granted, transfer would be granted to the Executor’s to allow them to fulfil the deceased’s wishes.
  3. Where an owner has passed away with no will (intestate), transfer is carried out by way of a Statutory Declaration and witnessed by a Solicitor

How much space is in a grave?

A full-size grave depth is prepared to a maximum of 6ft 6in deep, and a typical grave will accommodate two full size coffins. Once two full size coffins have been interred, there is also space for a further placement of eight sets of Cremated Remains.

We do have graves which are designed solely for the placement of Cremated Remains; these are smaller than a full-size grave and by default will only accommodate a maximum of for sets of Cremated Remains.

Can I erect a memorial headstone on a grave?

As the owner of the Exclusive Right of Burial, the right to erect a memorial is granted to the deed holder, and dependent upon the grave type purchased (for example, you will not be permitted to erect a kerb surround on a grave if you have purchased a lawned grave).

All memorial headstones, are granted via a permit. The application will be made by your appointed memorial mason; there are restrictions as to the type and material that we permit in our cemeteries. For specific details, please refer to our rules and regulations.

How can I find someone who I believe has been buried in one of the cemeteries owned by North Lincolnshire Council?

All our electronic records can now be accessed through our Discover Ever After site, however, we hold a large volume of records in old registers. If you’re unable to find a return using our Discover Ever After site, we may be able to complete a manual search on your behalf which will involve search through the physical records.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for, complete the Genealogy Search Request. Please note, we do require some detailed information in order to try and find you the most accurate records.
