Waste and recycling - why change?

A growing number of people are keen recyclers already. They fully support moves to make it easier. For those who can't see the point of the extra effort and expense, the answer is simple - we no longer have a choice. If you need reasons why we all must do our bit, try these:

  • We throw away too much. The earth's resources are finite. If we don't reduce and re-use what we class as 'waste' we'll run out of raw materials
  • Economically and environmentally, it makes sense to recycle. Re-using materials causes less pollution, uses fewer resources and saves money
  • There's not enough space to put the waste we produce in landfill. Landfill sites are filling up fast and other disposal methods are not long-term solutions
  • The council can only do so much. Your cooperation is essential. If together we do not continue to drive up the level of household waste recycled, we'll all pay - in higher council tax. There's no getting away from this.

The new recycling and waste collection scheme brings the area into line with many other parts of the country. Please see the link above or at the bottom of the page for a guide to your new recycling and waste collection scheme.

Although your green or grey wheeled bin will only be collected every other week, you'll still have a weekly waste collection. This is because separate containers for recyclable materials will be collected on alternate weeks.

In 2004/5 the council ran a successful trial scheme with around 10,000 properties on the Isle of Axholme and 6,000 properties in Scunthorpe. This boosted recycling rates to 40 per cent.  March 2006 was the first time that the new scheme covered the whole of North Lincolnshire.

If you have any problems or queries, please read through the attached guide to your new recycling and waste collections. And if you need any more information, please phone our customer helpline on 01724 297000.
