The council is busy taking action and have already delivered on several schemes to reduce its carbon footprint.
Action taken:

1. Extensive rollout of solar panels to schools and community buildings in Scunthorpe.
Over 1MW of rooftop solar capacity has been installed on over 25 schools and community buildings in Scunthorpe. This has saved approximately £200k in energy costs so far.
Latest installations; The Baths Hall, Lindsey Lodge, John Leggott College, Ashby Hub

2. Mass planting of trees and hedgerows across the area to help restore wildlife
Working with partners the council is well underway in planting 250,000 trees as part of the plans for a Northern Forest. The Northern Forest will restore vital biodiversity and improve natural protection against flooding.
Impact: Restoring biodiversity, protecting communities against flooding, and increasing levels of carbon sequestration.

3. Retrofitting of 95 private homes with support from the Homes Upgrade Grant
With funding support from the Homes Upgrade Grant, the Council have upgraded 95 private properties with insulation, lighting and solar to make them warmer, more energy efficient homes.
Impact: Reduced energy bills and improved home conditions.

4. Creation of disabled friendly allotments to improve access to nature
Repurposing an overgrown area to create a dedicated agricultural and learning space. The raised beds and workspace has been specially designed to be accessible and inclusive to people of all abilities. The allotments are now well-used by the community.
Impact: Increased knowledge on agriculture, repurposing of land improving environmental benefits.

5. Development of cycle and walking routes across North Lincolnshire
A continuation in the development of walking and cycling routes across North Lincolnshire to make cycling and walking easier, safer and more accessible. Over 5km of new routes have been delivered since 2022.
Impact: Reduced emissions from transport, healthier lifestyles from an uptake in walking and cycling.

6. Maintaining record lows of general waste going to landfill
The council continue to achieve record levels of waste ending up in landfill by working with suppliers to turn waste into a fuel source for energy.
Impact: Avoided carbon emissions associated waste to landfill, increased levels of recycling.

7. Support provided to Litter Picking Groups
Investing in 20+ bespoke litter picking bins to help more people pick up litter, making popular local spaces cleaner and litter free.
Impact: Enabling others to support in collecting waste, protecting our local wildlife and habitats.

8. Provided funding to over 30 business to allow them to undertake energy audits
With support from the UK Shared Prosperity Grant, the council have funded over 30 energy audits to local businesses to help them understand energy costs and identify potential measures to save energy.
Impact: Enabling others to reduce energy consumption.

9. Supporting the delivery of the Humber Industrial Decarbonisation Plan
Industry is a major emitter of CO2 in the region, the Council economic growth team continue to advocate and drive the delivery of the Humber Industrial Decarbonisation Plan via supporting the work of the Humber Energy Board.
Impact: Supporting industry reduce significant levels of carbon emissions.

10. Raising awareness and delivering educational sessions on climate change to over 1000 students
Over 1000 school children in North Lincolnshire have participated in educational sessions on the importance of climate change. The Council continue to support schools in setting up eco-councils and establishing eco-school awards.
Impact: Sharing of knowledge, increasing understanding on climate change.

11. Council switch to electric vehicles to maintain urban spaces
Investing in new low emission, electric vehicles to carry out general day-to-day maintenance in parks and public spaces.
Impact: Reduced emissions associated with delivering public services.
Category 5 – Sustainable Transport

12. Installation of electric vehicle charging points across North Lincolnshire
Installing 250+ electric vehicle charging points in targeted areas to support residents using or considering switching to an electric vehicle. The Charging Ahead initiative aims to push o with electrifying transport.
Impact: Building the infrastructure to support a shift to zero emission transport.
