How we are doing
Find out how the council are monitoring progress against targets.
Our progress in reducing our carbon emissions
The council have set a target to be net zero in its Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 2030, reflecting its commitment to preserving and protecting the environment in North Lincolnshire.
In accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, and to monitor and target areas for reduction the council produces a Carbon Emissions Report on an annual basis.
The total carbon footprint for North Lincolnshire Council during 2023/24 has been calculated at 65,933 tCO2e.
These emissions can be broken down into three separate scopes:
Scope 1: Direct emissions associated with the use of natural gas in buildings, fleet fuel consumption, refrigerants and other fossil fuels (5,159 tCO2e)
Scope 2: Indirect emissions associated with purchased electricity in buildings (2,827 tCO2e)
Scope 3: Indirect emissions associated from staff business travel, staff commuting, working from home, water consumption, purchased goods and services, waste, and upstream emissions from Scope 1 and 2 activities (Transmission & Distribution Losses) (57,947 tCO2e)

Key findings
The council’s carbon footprint is heavily concentrated around indirect scope 3 emissions which is common for a local authority. This is due to the sheer amount of goods and services purchased to deliver vital public services. In total, purchased goods and services account for 77% of the entire footprint.
Since 2020/21, the council have make good progress and have reduced its carbon footprint by approximately 20% equating to 15,642 tCO2e. These savings have been mainly generated from;
- Reductions in consumption of fossil fuels for heating.
- Deployment of renewable energy systems.
- Procurement of more environmentally friendly suppliers for goods and services.
The largest sources of emissions in scope 1 and 2 are;
- Heating consumption – 5%.
- Electricity consumption – 4%.
- Fleet vehicle emissions – 3%.
There is still a lot to do and our A Green Future Plan will help us to continue making progress.
