Streets not maintained by the Council are known as private streets and are responsibility of the owners.

Streets maintained at the Councils expense are known as adopted streets. Find out about highways in our area and if a street has been adopted.

The council has a duty of care, so may make dangerous problems on private roads safe.

This will usually be done by closing the road or or placing barriers around the problem. It is the responsibility of the street owners to arrange repairs.

The Council may charge street owners for any action we take to make something safe.

Adopting a street

For a Council, to adopt a street

  • The street must be constructed to an adoptable standard
  • The cost of the adoption must be met by the street owners.

The Council does not have money to assist with road adoption.

You may need to consult with neighbours and a competent engineer who can advise you on how to proceed.

You can contact us by phone on 01724 297000 if you would like to apply to have a street adopted.
