The Young Mayor of North Lincolnshire, Zaynah Jamal, is very passionate to make North Lincolnshire a cleaner and greener place and as part of her role, has launched her very own Young Mayor’s Environmental Award.
The award is set to recognise the good work of young people that are making a positive difference to the environment and their communities within North Lincolnshire.
After an annual youth ballot in 2019, one of the Youth Council’s key priorities is protecting the environment.
The North Lincolnshire Youth Council is where young people between the age of 11 and 19, up to 25 with special educational needs and disabilities, can voice their opinions on matters that are important to them.
They represent their views and that of their peers to others within the community and make sure that young people are heard, involved in important decision-making to drive positive change in North Lincolnshire. For more information on the Youth Council, visit the North Lincolnshire Council website.
The Youth Council have already been actively taking part in litter picking along the Ironstone Walk and Queensway in support of the Big September Clean Up last year, which resulted in 15 bags of litter being collected in just 2 hours.
Since the award launched, there was one nomination that stood out from the rest with all their hard work and at such a young age, the Mayor of North Lincolnshire, Zaynah Jamal has crowned Tilly, who is 6 years old and lives in Scunthorpe, to be the first environment champion.
Tilly has been very busy doing her bit for North Lincolnshire and the environment, from litter picks and fundraising for new bins to creating Conor the Covid snake in Central Park in Scunthorpe.
Since meeting the Young Mayor and receiving, her re-useable goodie bag filled with plenty of environment friendly goodies Tilly has gone straight to work and made a hedgehog house and some bird feeders.
She has been spreading the word to some of her friends, who have pledged to join her on future litter picks and created her very own ‘don’t litter’ poster which will be popping up in playgrounds and parks in Scunthorpe. Tilly wants to encourage others to put their litter in a bin or take it home, in a bid to help protect the environment and look after our planet.
