North Lincolnshire has today reaffirmed its commitment to ending violence against women and girls as the White Ribbon flag was proudly raised in Scunthorpe – a visible symbol of the community’s shared promise to speak up, challenge harmful behaviours, and promote respect and safety for all.

The ceremony brought together partners, campaigners and residents in a powerful show of solidarity. This year’s White Ribbon theme, We Speak Up, urges everyone – especially men and boys – to call out misogyny, challenge violence, and foster cultures where women and girls can live free from fear.

Following the flag raising outside Church Square House, attendees gathered at 20-21 to view artwork designed by local students exploring what White Ribbon means to them, alongside The Arc in Movements film and multimedia installation as part of the Women’s Movement 100 exhibition.

North Lincolnshire Council first achieved White Ribbon accreditation in 2014 and renewed it in 2024, continuing to lead regionally in raising awareness, supporting victims, and driving long-term behaviour change.

Cllr Rob Waltham, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said:

“We are proud to once again be promoting and supporting the White Ribbon movement in sending a clear message: violence against women and girls has no place in our communities.

“By raising the White Ribbon flag, we reaffirm our commitment to speak up, challenge harmful behaviours, and foster a culture of respect and accountability.”

Jonathan Evison, Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner, said:

“I am proud to be supporting such an important event to help end violence against women and girls. The flag raising ceremony shows a strong commitment from organisations to never commit, excuse or condone violence. White Ribbon is a really important initiative, and I would encourage organisations to sign the commitment if they haven’t already.”

Sharon Philpott, Chief Superintendent at Humberside Police, said:

“As a White Ribbon accredited force, we proudly stand with the movement to challenge harmful attitudes, raise awareness, and are committed to working with our partners to prevent male violence against women and girls, promoting a culture of respect, safety, and accountability.”

Cllr Carol Ross, Mayor of North Lincolnshire, said:

“Raising the White Ribbon flag is more than a ceremony – it’s a promise. A promise that as a community, we will speak up, challenge violence, and support those affected.”

The flag raising was organised through the Community Safety Partnership, which is funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner and brings together North Lincolnshire Council, Humberside Police, Humberside Fire and Rescue, Ongo, Probation and the North Lincolnshire Health and Care Partnership. Together, these organisations work to reduce crime, support victims, and build safer communities.
