A year after almost £140,000 was invested to improve safety at the busy junction of Exeter Road and Cliff Gardens in Scunthorpe, major improvements to safety can be seen now traffic lights are in place.
A road safety audit was recently carried out that showed since the traffic lights were installed in December 2023 there have been no injury related collisions. In the 10 years prior to the improvements there were 4 serious accidents, and 11 minor accidents recorded.
The improvements have made the area safer for both drivers and pedestrians and has helped public transport travel around the area easier.
Vehicles on Exeter Road used to have to give way to those on Cliff Gardens now each approach is controlled by the lights so only certain traffic movements can be undertaken at any one time.
Cllr Tim Mitchell, cabinet member for connectivity, said:
“Keeping people safe and well is a top priority for the council, which is why the improvements at this busy junction were made to increase the safety for motorists and pedestrians. The outcome of the safety audit is just fantastic as it shows the traffic lights are making a difference and helping to keep people safe.”
