Shop safe and shop local this Christmas

North Lincolnshire moves into Tier 3: Very High Alert today, meaning retail outlets can open their doors in time for Christmas.

We are asking people to make the most of the time we now have before the festivities by pacing and planning shopping trips to avoid any crowding or rush.

But residents are being urged to stay safe as they stock up for Christmas, and that means following social distancing guidelines, washing hands often, wearing a face covering, and following current rules on meeting up in groups – detailed information is available on our website here.

“While it is tempting to rush out to shops to get those Christmas presents bought, we want to remind people that the virus is still out there. In the week to 25 November over 450 North Lincolnshire residents tested positive for Covid-19,” said North Lincolnshire Senior Public Health Consultant Jilla Burgess-Allen.

“Last month’s restrictions were tough on everyone, but they have worked and our infection numbers are falling. They are still too high though, so I would urge people to please follow the guidelines carefully – that is the best way to keep ourselves and others safe as we prepare for Christmas.”

Shopping locally can be a safe way to shop, as long as you follow guidelines:

  • Wear a face covering
  • Observe the number of people allowed in the shop
  • Keep the two-metre distance from other shoppers where possible
  • Use hand sanitiser and wash hands whenever you can
  • Only touch items you intend to buy
  • Pay by contactless card where possible
  • Bring your own bags
  • Be kind – some people find adapting to the new rules difficult

Travelling other than for essential reasons is discouraged, so if you must go shopping, now is the ideal time to rediscover your nearest high street and shop local.

North Lincolnshire’s popular market towns have all rallied round, many offering delivery or online services throughout the summer. Rediscover them this Christmas, and you will find unusual gifts and personal service.

Independent traders sell items you won’t find in chain stores or online, so you can find a wide variety of interesting and unusual items – ideal if you are looking for something special.

Local shop owners can offer that personal touch, giving shoppers a warm welcome. Many will order in goods specially and they can offer specific advice and bespoke products.

For one stop shopping while staying safe at home, you can find everything in one place at North Lincolnshire Council’s Christmas Market, a Facebook group bringing together dozens of local traders.

New festive offers are posted every day, so there is no need to miss out on any special seasonal deals.
