2025 will mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, with two key dates to remember, Thursday 8 May and Friday 15 August.
Thursday 8 May is Victory in Europe Day (VE Day). This is the day the German forces surrendered to the Allied powers.
Friday 15 August is Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day). This is the day on which Imperial Japan surrendered, in effect bringing World War two to an end.
To commemorate these monumental moments in history, town and parish councils and community groups (including voluntary organisations) can apply for grant funding from North Lincolnshire Council to bring people together for VE Day and/or VJ Day.
Cllr Rob Waltham, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Our Community Grant Fund supports community groups and buildings, sports clubs and projects, town and parish councils and individuals across North Lincolnshire.
“It cultivates connections and strengthen bonds and is part of our continued investment in communities including last year’s D Day, In Bloom and Environmental Grants.”
The council has committed £20,000 from its Community Grant Fund to help towns and villages commemorate the anniversary, with anything from small community events to larger celebrations.
Cllr Richard Hannigan, cabinet member for Independent Families: Adults and Health added: “It is crucial that we continue to commemorate significant historical events and enable people to honour the sacrifices made long ago and we’re proud to be able to allocate specific funding for these groups to honour VE Day and VJ Day.
“Groups can apply for a maximum of £500 (£250 per anniversary) for their planned event until 12 noon on Monday 20 January 2025.”
