The Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, Cllr Rob Waltham has marked National Allotment Week by celebrating the health, environmental, and community benefits of allotments – along with a commitment to protect sites from development and to look to expand provisions where North Lincolnshire council can.
He praised local allotment holders for their dedication to growing fresh produce, supporting biodiversity, and building stronger communities.
Cllr Waltham, said: “Allotments are so much more than a place to grow fruit and vegetables – they are spaces for friendship, exercise, fresh air, and food security. They bring people together, support mental health and wellbeing, and play a vital role in our local environment. They are the very essence of community life.”
The council is committed to:
- Protect existing allotment sites from development
- Explore opportunities to create new plots where demand exists
- Support allotment societies and community growers with advice and resources
- Promote allotments as part of the area’s green infrastructure and wellbeing strategy
Cllr Waltham, added:
“I know the Government are keen for councils to consider selling allotments to developers, however that will not happen on my watch.
“We have more work to do to support our allotment holders and I am keen that we strengthen our relationships with them. Whether you’re a seasoned grower or someone considering their first plot, allotments offer a fantastic opportunity to live more sustainably, save money, and enjoy the outdoors. I would encourage everyone to see what allotment life has to offer – you might be surprised at the rewards.”
