At a time when many councils are closing libraries, North Lincolnshire Council is investing in them as vital community assets – places where children and families can learn, grow, and thrive.

This summer, more than 1,000 children across North Lincolnshire took part in the Summer Reading Challenge, enjoying a season filled with stories, discovery, and imagination.

A total of 1,089 children joined the challenge, with 526 becoming new library members. Together, they borrowed nearly 17,000 books, DVDs and CDs, plus almost 1,000 e-books and audiobooks – a clear sign that the love of reading continues to flourish across all ages.

The challenge, themed Story Garden, encouraged children and families to explore nature and the outdoors while supporting wellbeing. Library staff embraced the theme to make reading a joyful and calming experience.

Sixteen volunteers, many of them young people, helped deliver the programme. Their enthusiasm inspired others to take part, while gaining valuable skills and confidence themselves.

Libraries also hosted 15 events, attracting more than 1,100 children, young people, and adults. Highlights included the popular Booknic sessions, which brought families together to share stories, crafts, and outdoor fun.

Cllr Rob Waltham, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “In North Lincolnshire we do our best to invest in things that make a difference for families and communities.

Libraries are at the heart of our communities, helping children to develop a lifelong love of reading. It’s fantastic to see so many young people take part this year, and to know that hundreds of families are making reading part of their daily lives.”

Cllr Julie Reed, Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Communities, added: “Reading for pleasure builds confidence, sparks creativity, and supports children’s wellbeing. Programmes like this make a real difference, giving families the space to enjoy reading together and helping children see just how fun libraries can be.”

The Summer Reading Challenge is just one of many ways the council is helping children and families to thrive – supporting learning, health, and wellbeing across North Lincolnshire.

Produced by The Reading Agency and delivered in partnership with local libraries, the challenge will return in 2026 with the theme Read to the Beat, as part of the National Year of Reading.

Families don’t have to wait until next summer – library membership is free and open all year round, with a wide range of books, activities, and events available.
