Young jobseekers have been given a welcome boost with the official launch of a one-stop-shop designed to help them find work and training.

The Youth Hub, part of the Action Station, is dedicated to helping young people improve their skills, acquire knowledge, build confidence and find work.

Both virtual and appointments-based in Ashby Community Hub, support is offered with interviews and applications, assessing the participant’s current skills and aspirations, accessing training and providing encouragement and motivation throughout their employment journey.

The Hub was set up last December and has so far helped 85 young people into paid jobs and enabled them access Kickstart placements, apprenticeships, and work experience opportunities.

It was established by North Lincolnshire Council in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), with staff from the Action Station mentoring young people who are referred to them by the Jobcentre.

The Youth Hub face to face interviews are now situated in Ashby Community Hub, where Leader of North Lincolnshire Council Rob Waltham attended the official opening along with Scunthorpe MP Holly Mumby Croft.

Youth Hub success story Ryan Swan said: “I tried them to see if they worked and within less than a day of sending off my modified CV and covering letter. I have already got an interview. [It is a] really relaxed environment, helps keep you calm and stay involved, you really want to engage back with them.”

Fellow success story Hayley Machin said: “It helped me get onto a training course for a food hygiene certificate, it helped me get a Kickstart job. [They were] very knowledgeable and accepting of any circumstances that you may have.”

Cllr Waltham said the council was committed to enabling young people to achieve their potential and secure a positive future.

“We do not want any young person to be left behind. Despite the pandemic, there are many opportunities for those starting a career or wanting to progress to get a better paid job.

“Through providing these opportunities we are giving young people a chance to play their part in growing the economy in North Lincolnshire.

“The Youth Hub are doing a fantastic job and I would urge any young person to contact them – they can help you change your future for the better.”

Youth Hub advisors can help young people overcome barriers including health and housing problems or difficult family or personal circumstances. Ask your DWP coach to refer you or email action.station@northlincs.gov.uk.
