The leader of North Lincolnshire Council has welcomed a speech from the Prime Minister committing to further devolution of power and money to regions across the country.

The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, outlined how more devolution deals across the country would support the Government’s levelling up agenda.

Welcoming the announcement, Cllr Rob Waltham, said: “For too long the focus has been on investing in London and the South East. That is clearly now no longer the case.

“We have heard the further intent from the Prime Minister and we are actually already seeing a commitment to levelling up here in North Lincolnshire.

“We have a huge opportunity to collaborate with a Government committed to working with northern leaders. This will provide even more money to back our plans for recovery and renewal.

“We will be working closely with partners across Greater Lincolnshire to ensure that the benefits of this are felt by residents across the area.”

In his speech on his vision to level up the United Kingdom, the Prime Minister said: “We need to re-write the rulebook, with new deals for the counties.

“There is no reason why our great counties cannot benefit from the same powers we have devolved to city leaders so that they can take charge of levelling up.”

The commitment comes after a raft of Government cash has already been made available for development projects in North Lincolnshire across the last few months.

A recent bid by North Lincolnshire Council for £90m as part of the Levelling-Up Fund comes in addition to the near £25m towns deal, £10m Future High Streets, £75m for a new port on the South Humber bank, £5m for the A15 resurfacing, £4m for the M181 Northern Junction and £7m for the Southern junction and the £200m paid to support jobs throughout the pandemic.
