The leader of North Lincolnshire Council has welcomed a Government announcement taking a pioneering carbon capture project to the next stage – part of a national £20bn investment.

The Viking carbon capture plans will support existing jobs in North Lincolnshire and create new, high-skilled, well-paid engineering roles.

Cllr Rob Waltham said: “The Government announcement on carbon capture will support our high energy intensive industries locally and is great news for the area and has the potential to create thousands of jobs and at the same time help us move towards our net zero carbon ambitions.

“It further enables future expansion of the Carbon Capture opportunity to support a greater number of local businesses as they transition towards a greener, more prosperous future.

“This commitment to net zero comes alongside sustaining and creating jobs, not at the expense of people’s livelihoods.”

Investment of up to £7-billion across the full CO2 capture, transport and storage value chain between 2025 and 2035 has been eyed for Viking, creating more than 10,000 jobs during construction and providing a £4 billion economic boost to the region.

Cllr Waltham added: “I am delighted the Government is investing in new green jobs and this will drastically reduce emissions in our region and protect and grow our economy.”
