Cllr Rob Waltham has written to Health Secretary, Wes Streeting calling for investment in maternity services at Scunthorpe General Hospital as part of the review of National Maternity and Neonatal Services announced on 23 June 2025.
Cllr Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council said: “I have written to the Secretary of State making it clear we support the national investigation into improving maternity health services. However, for areas like North Lincolnshire, we must ensure this review leads to more than just empty recommendations, we need real investment where risk is highest, and that includes Scunthorpe General Hospital.
“I was born in Scunthorpe hospital, like many residents, and we have deep ties to this hospital. Families deserve safe, modern, and well-resourced maternity care, not second-tier services based on postcode,”
Maternity services at Scunthorpe remain under significant pressure and are currently listed as high risk in relation to quality and safety. With a growing and increasingly diverse population, local services are stretched thin, both in terms of hospital buildings and staffing.
