North Lincolnshire Council is urging the government to protect and promote Scunthorpe’s world-class integrated steelworks and its highly skilled, dedicated workforce.
In a position statement sent to the government, the council emphasises that anything less would create an economic crisis for the area and would be a tragedy for the community.
On behalf of local steelworkers, their families, and future generations, the council has pledged to:
• Champion the Scunthorpe steelworks as a globally significant asset, supporting its continued development and the talented people who produce steel.
• Work closely with British Steel to protect jobs and ensure the future viability of steel production in North Lincolnshire.
• Engage collaboratively with the UK government to attract further investment into Scunthorpe’s steel production facilities.
• Advocate for long-term government involvement — including the possibility of nationalisation — to guarantee the continuity of primary steelmaking in Scunthorpe and across the UK
In addition, the council has pledged to:
• Prioritise the use of UK steel in all its procurement policies.
• Urge the UK government to adopt the same stance in national procurement strategies.
The position statement can be found on the Invest in North Lincolnshire website.
