Children from across the area have taken part in the biggest-ever programme of free holiday activities – staying active, learning new skills and eating healthier in the process.

The Fuelled activity programme enabled children from low-income families to enjoy everything from martial arts to motocross for free.

During the programme, almost 50 providers hosted events in every corner of North Lincolnshire, meaning more families could take advantage of the facilities on their doorsteps without the need to travel.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said:

“With the global situation causing rising energy and food bills, I am delighted the Government has stepped in to help vulnerable families, and funding activity programmes for children is another example of this in action.

“Not only do children get so much from the free activities, they have also been a crucial help to hard-working families.

“The programme has enabled them to access affordable childcare and continue in employment, safe in the knowledge that their children are being entertained in safe and fun environments and will come home having already eaten a healthy meal.

“It has been a massive boost in these challenging times.”

As well as taking part in the activities, the programme has also helped dozens more young people aged between 12 and 16 to gain a leadership qualification.

North Lincolnshire Council worked closely with Hull University to offer courses in sports leadership, FA refereeing, swimming teaching and the silver arts award, all designed to help young people into work or further education.

Cllr Julie Reed, cabinet member for children and families, said:

“The holidays can be challenging for parents and children and the Fuelled program is a great opportunity for children to try out new activities, learn new skills, make new friends and stay connected with their communities.

“I know families will be happy to hear that work is already going on behind the scenes to arrange more fantastic Fuelled events over the Christmas holidays.”
