A campaign to save a popular pub and music venue has been given a major boost after the council officially recognised the building as a community asset.
An application to have the Lincoln Imp recognised as an Asset of Community Value was approved by North Lincolnshire Council – meaning qualifying interest groups must now be given an opportunity to make a bid for the pub if the owner decides to sell.
North Lincolnshire Council leader Cllr Rob Waltham approved the application for the Gloucester Avenue pub. He said: “We recognise the importance of the Lincoln Imp for the community not just in Ashby but across the whole of North Lincolnshire.
“It’s been recognised as one of the best small music venues in the country and has been for many years – following an application for the pub to be made an asset of community value, the council considered this under the legal process and the criteria was met in accordance with localism legislation.
“I want to pay tribute to the hard work of landlady Lorraine Briggs in campaigning to keep the Imp open, as well as important community groups, such as Break The Stigma, who have supported this application.
“We’ll continue to fight hard to ensure the Imp remains part of the local and national music scene.”
Properties can be listed as Community Assets if they improve the community’s social wellbeing or social interest, including cultural, sporting or recreational interests.
As a 300-capacity live music venue, the Lincoln Imp is an established cornerstone for local bands and musicians as well as hosting touring groups.
It was voted the third best small music venue in the UK in a 2017 poll.
