Leader demands action over Horkstow Bridge

Council leader Rob Waltham has demanding urgent action to protect Horkstow Bridge and prevent further damage to the historic structure – after reports that vandals have breached security measures around the site.

Residents have raised concerns that sections of fencing installed to prevent access have been removed, creating a risk that people could once again gain entry to the bridge and cause further damage.

There are also growing frustrations that river users have been unable to access the bridge for months, with little information available about when repairs will take place or access will be restored.

The Grade II listed bridge is maintained by the Environment Agency and is regarded as one of North Lincolnshire’s most distinctive historic landmarks.

Cllr Rob Waltham said: “Residents are understandably worried. This is an important historic structure and residents do not want to see it damaged any further through vandalism or neglect.

“There are also legitimate concerns about safety. If security measures are being breached, there is a risk that people could gain access to a structure that has already been deemed unsafe.

“Residents have been patient, but that is understandably wearing thin – they deserve clear answers about what is happening, when repairs will begin and when the bridge can be safely reopened.”

In a letter to the Environment Agency, Cllr Waltham has called for immediate action to fully secure the site and prevent further unauthorised access. He has also requested an update on the bridge’s structural condition, a timetable for restoration works and confirmation of when access for river users is expected to be reinstated.

The letter highlights growing concern among local residents that the current arrangements are not preventing further vandalism and calls for improved communication about the future of the bridge.

Cllr Waltham added: “Residents are contacting me and my fellow ward members Carl and Nigel everyday – we are all fed up with seeing a treasured landmark targeted by mindless vandalism. Residents are acting responsibly, yet they are the ones left without access while those causing the damage continue to create problems.

“We all want to see Horkstow Bridge protected and restored for future generations. That means securing it properly now, preventing further damage and providing residents with the clarity they deserve about what happens next.”
