North Lincolnshire has been selected as one of the few areas to benefit from a £1m plus grant aimed at training local people for industries of the future. This pilot initiative is designed to support targeted areas where there is evidence of clean energy opportunities and to support people to gain the skills as we reduce carbon. The goal is to develop a better understanding of which local interventions are most successful in building the skilled workforce needed to meet the UK’s clean energy mission.
The grant will be used to help hundreds of people improve their skills and prepare them for new industries that are set to flourish in the coming years, including green energy jobs.
Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, commented: “The Government has made it clear these grants are going to areas where reducing carbon has the potential for major job losses. With the future of the steel works in Scunthorpe still uncertain, and businesses being hit by rising taxes, this is a difficult time for the area. We continue to work with British Steel to develop surplus land at the steelworks to harness new technology and create green jobs.
“Master planning is underway to attract high-paid and high-skilled jobs to the area – using new technologies to create green industry. This grant will help us get local people ready for these new roles. We welcome this investment that will help local people get the skills they need to take advantage of new technologies.”
