North Lincolnshire Council has secured a prosecution against a Brigg resident for fly-tipping after boxes and packaging materials were found dumped on Cadney Road.

Evidence found in the fly-tip pointed to a Mr Fred Turnbull of Ash Grove, Brigg. He was interviewed under caution at Church Square House in Scunthorpe, where he admitted dumping the waste.

The fly-tipped waste presented a serious hazard to road users, as it was left at night on the unlit road between Cadney and Brigg.

Mr Turnbull attended Grimsby Magistrates Court on 12 April 2019 and was fined £666. He was also ordered to pay £411.14 costs and a £66 victim surcharge, bringing the total fine to £1,143.14.

In another fly-tipping case, a Crosby resident who dumped their household waste behind a neighbour’s property in Burke Street was caught on CCTV and was given a £120 Fixed Penalty Notice in April 2019.

Cllr Carl Sherwood, cabinet member for Environment and Community Wellbeing, said:

“Mr Turnbull showed a complete disregard for the countryside and other road users, potentially putting lives at risk by dumping waste that could have quite easily been disposed of legally at one of our Household Recycling Centres.

“North Lincolnshire taxpayers should not have to pick up the bill, which amounts to over £1m per year, when others choose to fly-tip waste. This £1,100 fine shows that we take this crime very seriously and will not hesitate to take offenders to court.

“We won’t tolerate people who decide to be irresponsible with household rubbish in North Lincolnshire, as these cases show. We have secured Government funding to get tough on fly-tippers in Crosby and have an enforcement team working in the area to address and proactively target a range of issues.”
