The benefits of cycling

Cycling can make you feel good about life – whether you want to improve your fitness, help to improve the environment or have a little fun with your family, cycling is the ideal activity.

Health professionals recommend that adults undertake at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise five times a week. The easiest way to become more active is to incorporate active travel into your daily routine. Cycling to work, school or the shops is an easy way to achieve this and in urban areas it might be quicker than taking the car and finding somewhere to park.

An average person should be able to cycle two miles in around 15 minutes, burning roughly 120 calories.

Some of the key benefits of cycling are:

  • improves mental wellbeing
  • promotes weight loss
  • cuts heart disease and cancer risk
  • low impact
  • helps you sleep better
  • can save time and money
  • environmentally friendly

Many schools in North Lincolnshire offer cycle training for children in Years 5 or 6, either the council’s cycle training scheme or Bikeability. For more information contact your school or e-mail roadsafety@northlincs.gov.uk

UK British Cycling’s website has some great activities for children and young people.

We have a network of off-road cycle routes which include the Scunthorpe Ridgeway (NCN 169) a six mile route running from Burringham Road in the south to Lodge Lane in the north. The route connects residential areas with the colleges, hospital, park, Normanby Enterprise Park. If you would like a leaflet of this route, please contact us.

The Sustrans route 1, part of the national cycle network, runs from Hull to Harwich. It crosses the Humber Bridge and takes cyclists thorough the North Lincolnshire’s uncongested roads, taking in the picturesque rolling Wolds.

The council is also developing the Stainforth and Keadby Canal multi-user path linking Scunthorpe and Crowle.

Work is ongoing on the Ancholme Valley Way a multi user path along the River Ancholme from Brigg.

In addition to this, we have developed a series of self-guided rides around North Lincolnshire, which can be downloaded from the Visit North Lincolnshire website.

If you want to become more active, but don’t want to do it by yourself, then try joining one of our guided rides. These are free rides, which are led by experienced cyclists and are aimed at different levels from new starters to regular cyclists. For more information go to the Let’s Ride webpage or the Guided Rides North Lincs Facebook group.
