Music Centre
The Music Centre provides a wonderful opportunity for children and young people to discover the world of music outside their lessons in schools, to experience playing with other young musicians, and to create music with their peers.
There are a range of activities available, whether your child has been learning an instrument for a while or are just starting out in their journey.
The Music Centre offers a fun and social environmental where learning is accelerated with the support of our expert tutors. Our students have the opportunity to perform in a variety of concerts throughout the year, growing their confidence and enabling them to discover the thrill of live performance.
Across our music centres, we offer:
NL Orchestra for students who have some experience on their instrument, either through school, private lessons or a music club. This is a youth orchestra aimed at orchestral instruments (flute, violin, clarinet, saxophone, viola, cello, trumpet etc.) with provision to accommodate drums, bass and guitar. NL Orchestra was formerly known as Saturday Soundtrack Band. This class takes place at The Baths Hall, Saturdays from 10am to 12pm. The NL Orchestra is also compromised of NL Strings and NL Wind Band, which each player will be a respective member depending on their instrument.
NL Juniors for students who have had some whole class lessons at school OR have had some lessons on their instrument and can play and read at least five notes. This was formerly known as the Beginners Band and is aimed at students just starting on their instrument. This class takes place at The Baths Hall, Saturdays from 10am to 12pm.
Taiko for students wanting to learn Japanese styles of drumming. Please note that drums are provided in this class and please see the age specifications for each class below. This class takes place at The Baths Hall, Mondays from 5pm to 6pm (Juniors) and 6pm to 7pm (Senior). [Humber Taiko]
Music Makers for students making their first steps into music making and complete beginners. Students here will get to experience playing different instruments in a fun afterschool environment. This class takes place at The Baths Hall, Mondays from 4pm to 5pm. Please read more about this new class below!
Rock & Pop: Afternoon Sessions for students who play guitar, bass, drums, keys and popular/music theatre singing and want to hone their craft in a popular music environment, working in band style settings to learn their instruments, and how to play with each other. This class takes place at Sir John Nelthorpe School, Mondays from 4pm to 6pm.
Music Theory for students wanting extra help with their theory knowledge – an invaluable asset to reading and understanding music! This class takes place at Frederick Gough School, Tuesdays from 4pm to 5pm.
Music Makers
Our new ‘Music Makers’ group is designed for children aged five to nine. This session will provide an opportunity for children to try a variety of instruments and take their first steps into group music making! This takes place at The Baths Hall, Scunthorpe, on Mondays from 4pm to 5pm.
This class is perfect for children who have never picked up and instrument before or are fledglings on an instrument. There is no requirement to be able to read music or even own an instrument to join this class. Alongside exploring the various instruments of the orchestra, your children will learn the fundamentals of performing, reading music, playing in an ensemble, following a conductor and even composing their own music!
If your child is interested in learning an instrument, but doesn’t know which one, has no experience or just wants to explore the joys of making music after school – this class is for them! Five to nine years old is the perfect age for a child to start learning an instrument, as their motor skills and cognitive retrieval strength are developed enough to undertake and practise new skills. This class acts as the perfect foundation for your child picking up an instrument, learning about music making and supports your child’s music education external to their school curriculum. While children will get the opportunity to try a range of orchestral instruments, please note that this class does not teach your child how to play, for example, the clarinet or guitar specifically. Rather it facilitates your child learning the principles of making music, all of which underpin and fortify learning an actual instrument. This class also utilises instruments such as ukeleles, recorders, xylophones and singing to structure your child’s learning in a fun and accessible environment.
If you have any queries around your child’s suitability for this class, please email music@northlincs.gov.uk.
Rock and Pop: The Afternoon Sessions
Our new popular music provision, Rock and Pop: The Afternoon Sessions, is for guitarists, bassists, drummers, singers and keyboard players and takes place at Sir John Nelthorpe School on Mondays from 4pm to 6pm.
This class is perfect for secondary school students looking to advance their performance, playing and improvisation skills in popular music. Our teachers leading this class have enjoyed rich and varied careers in gigging, touring and song writing, working as session players, musical theatre orchestra players, original musicians and band leaders. Students will hone their craft on their respective instrument in a band setting, working and playing in a relaxed and supportive afterschool environment.
This class is open to all students across North Lincolnshire, not just the students of Sir John Nelthorpe. If you have any queries around your child’s suitability for this class, please email music@northlincs.gov.uk.
