Introduction

This profile provides a brief picture of public health outcomes for mothers and under 5s in the South Axholme Children’s Centre catchment area for 2023. Summary narrative

South Axholme Children’s Centre is located in Epworth in the Isle locality. The catchment area encompasses Axholme South and part of Axholme Central wards south of the M180.

An estimated 575 under 5s live in this catchment area which represents 6.5% of all under 5s in North Lincolnshire; just over a quarter (27%) of resident women are of child bearing age, one of the lowest proportions in North Lincolnshire, and there are very low numbers of women born outside of the UK.

Health outcomes for adults are some of the best in North Lincolnshire with both male and female life expectancy significantly above average.

Child poverty in the area is low with no under 5s residing in England’s 30% most deprived neighbourhoods; about one in seven children live in both relative low income or are eligible for free school meals and only 5% of households with children claim Universal Credit; all significantly below average for North Lincolnshire and England.

The area has the lowest fertility rate in North Lincolnshire, very low numbers of births to women with minority ethnic backgrounds, women under 20 and one in eight women smoke during pregnancy; with three quarters of women initiating breastfeeding after birth it has the highest rate in North Lincolnshire.

In contrast to the above, however, a third (35%) of pregnant women have a high BMI which is one of the highest values across the local authority.

GCSE attainment in English and Maths is significantly above local and national average values.

Nearly a quarter (23%) of 5 year olds and just under a third (31%) of 11 year old residents carry excess weight which are some of the lowest values in North Lincolnshire.

Accident and Emergency attendances plus admissions for respiratory infections and injury are all some of the lower values in North Lincolnshire.
