Summary narrative

Ashby Children’s Centre is located in Scunthorpe South locality with the catchment including parts of Ashby and Kingsway with Lincoln Gardens wards.

An estimated 730 under 5s live in this catchment area which represents just over 8% of all under 5s in North Lincolnshire; a third (36%) of resident women are of child bearing age.

The adult population of this area have poorer health than average with male life expectancy significantly lower than the local and national averages.

This catchment has relatively high levels of child poverty with over half of the under 5 population living in England’s 30% most deprived areas, a quarter of u16s living in relative low income and 30% eligible for free school meals; one in ten households with children claim Universal Credit and 6% are in receipt of DLA; numbers living in relative low income and claiming DLA have increased significantly since 2016/17.

One in ten mothers resident in the area are born outside of the UK which is significantly lower than average and about one in eight deliveries are to women of a minority ethnic background.

With only 59% of mothers initiating breastfeeding, rates are significantly lower than average; about one in ten births are premature or of a low weight which are amongst the highest in North Lincolnshire and one in six women smoke during pregnancy.

Whilst school readiness at 5 years is average, early years development and GCSE attainment in English and Maths are the lowest in North Lincolnshire

Whilst Accident and Emergency attendances for under 5 residents of Ashby catchment area are average, admissions for injury and respiratory infections are some of the highest in North Lincolnshire.
