Last week (6–12 October) was Kinship Care Week, a national celebration of kinship families across England and Wales. Kinship carers are grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, and family friends who step up to raise a child when their parents cannot. They play a vital role in providing children across the country with loving, stable homes while keeping them connected to their families, roots, and communities.

To recognise and thank local kinship carers, the North Lincolnshire Fostering Team hosted a special brunch, bringing carers together to celebrate their incredible commitment and dedication. The event gave carers the chance to connect, share experiences, and be recognised for the vital role they play in children’s lives.

Cllr Julie Reed, cabinet member for children, families and communities, said: “Our kinship carers are truly inspiring. They step forward, often in challenging circumstances, to provide children with stability and love within their family networks. Kinship Care Week gave us the chance to show our gratitude and shine a light on the important role they play.”

One local kinship carer, who attended the brunch, said: He’s come on so well since he came to live with me. I didn’t think we would be where we are now, he’s doing amazing.

As part of the celebrations, the fostering team has also been sharing stories from kinship carers about their experiences, helping to raise awareness and highlight the difference they make every day.

Now, as Kinship Care Week has drawn to a close, the fostering team is preparing to mark Children of Foster Carers Week (13–19 October) – another opportunity to celebrate the young people who play an important part in fostering families, showing kindness, understanding, and resilience.

Together, these awareness weeks shine a spotlight on the community of carers and families in North Lincolnshire who make a lasting difference in children’s lives.
