A new exhibition opening this November at North Lincolnshire Museum will transport visitors on a nostalgic journey through the sights, sounds and stories of the region’s rich cinema history.

‘Picture House Past: Cinemas of North Lincolnshire’ opens on 22 November 2025 and runs until 3 May 2026. The free exhibition explores the magic of the silver screen and the cherished local buildings that once brought people together through film.

From the flickering reels of the 1890s to the last showing at Scunthorpe’s iconic Majestic Cinema in 2003, the exhibition celebrates more than a century of movie-going in towns and villages across North Lincolnshire.

Through photographs, fascinating artefacts and heartfelt personal stories, visitors can relive the era when cinema was at the heart of local life.

Among the highlights is the long-awaited return of the Majestic Cinema mosaic, a colourful and much-loved feature salvaged from the building before its demolition. Now lovingly conserved, the mosaic will be displayed alongside original equipment, posters and cinema programmes from the region’s golden age of film.

Short films created for the exhibition also bring to life the memories of local residents, who recall the joy, excitement and shared experience of a night at the pictures.

Cllr John Davison, cabinet member for community wellbeing (urban), said: “Cinemas once played a central role in community life across North Lincolnshire, they were places where people came together, shared moments, and made memories. This exhibition not only celebrates that vibrant past but brings it to life for a new generation.

“From the conservation of the Majestic mosaic to the voices of local people sharing their stories, we’re bringing something that really matters to our communities – a connection to our shared heritage, and pride in our local identity.”

‘Picture House Past’ is open during normal museum hours – Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, and Sundays from 1pm to 4pm – with free entry for all visitors.

The exhibition is part of the Council’s wider commitment to protecting local heritage and making culture accessible for everyone.
