North Lincolnshire Council is encouraging residents and businesses to pledge to help clear up litter from across our area during the Great British Spring Clean 2023.

This year’s mass campaign, from 17 March to 2 April, brings together individuals, community organisations, businesses and councils to make a difference to the environment on our doorstep.

Environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy who run the campaign is keen to stress litter picking can be accessible to everybody with the right resources.

Last year’s Great British Spring Clean was a great success in North Lincolnshire resulting in over 1000 bags of rubbish being collected by more than 200 individuals.

Having been involved right from the start, this will be the 8th year that North Lincolnshire Council has backed the campaign and it is hoped that this year will be the biggest and best yet.

The aim is to get each and every person to ‘pledge a bag’. Whether that’s collecting a few bits of rubbish on the school run, getting your workplace to take part in a lunch hour litter pick or organising a weekend clean up with friends; it all helps.

After the 2022 campaign, 85% of people who took part said they felt more pride for their local area – and volunteers picked a colossal 449,406 bags of litter across the country.

A post campaign survey of participants also shows 71% agreed that they feel more a part of their local community and 69% agreed that they are more aware of the litter issues in their local area.

The council currently spend over £1m a year on cleaning up the area. At the end of last year a raft of recycling bins were installed in towns and villages across North Lincolnshire, improving the network of more than 1500 bins already in place.

Cllr David Rose, cabinet member for environment said:

“I am delighted to be once again backing The Great British Spring Clean in North Lincolnshire and think we can make this the best year yet.  I would also like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to those who have been involved in previous years.

“I’m now calling on all residents to show pride in our area by pledging to pick a bag or more of litter, helping make a huge difference to the environment.

“The support of our community throughout this campaign really is noticed and valued, further enhancing the hard work and money already spent on keeping North Lincolnshire clean, safe and tidy.

“It’s action like this that will put us one step closer to achieving the aims within our ‘Green Future’ strategy”.
