The Great British Spring Clean has finished – but it has left a nasty smell behind after litterpicking volunteers in Ashby’s Everest Park playing fields found 156 poo bags.
Disgusting dog owners had gone to the trouble of bagging up their dog’s waste – then thrown the bag away instead of putting it in one of the nearby bins.
As well as the poo bags, 25 bags of litter were collected by Scunthorpe Litterpickers, including a motorbike helmet and a crisp packet from 2002.
In the same weekend, 41 bags of poo were also collected from Healey Road park.
Scunthorpe Litterpickers member Tracey said: “This is shocking and irresponsible. If you are one of the people doing this then please stop – this is a children’s park. It’s disgusting behaviour.”
Cllr David Rose, cabinet member for environment, echoed her concern: “The council has bins placed around these areas and empties them weekly – there is no excuse for dropping waste bags or hanging them in a tree.
“They are not only unsightly and smelly but dangerous to children and wildlife. We will not hesitate to fine people who are doing this.
“It isn’t the responsibility of someone else, particularly our dedicated volunteers, to clear up after you. If you can’t put your dog’s waste in a bin, or take it home, you are not responsible enough to be a dog owner.”
Bags and litter-picking equipment can be provided for litter picks by calling the council on 01724 297000 or emailing neighbourhoodservices@northlincs.gov.uk.
