Four North Lincolnshire parks have once again been recognised as among the finest green spaces in the UK by retaining their prestigious Green Flag Awards.
The international award, run by the Keep Britain Tidy campaign, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.
The winning parks are:
- Baysgarth Park, Barton-upon-Humber
- Central Park, Scunthorpe
- Kingsway Gardens, Scunthorpe
- Woodlands Memorial Gardens, Scunthorpe
Kingsway Gardens and Woodlands Memorial Gardens have received the award for 13 years running, with Central Park holding its award for four years, and three years for Baysgarth Park.
Cllr David Rose, cabinet member for environment, said:
“I want to thank all our maintenance staff and volunteers, as well as the Friends of Baysgarth Park, for all they have done to adapt to changing circumstances and keep our green spaces at such a high standard despite the challenge of recent events.
“We know that our communities appreciate the efforts they go, especially this year when people have been enjoying the beauty of our local environment more than ever.
“I am very proud of North Lincolnshire’s parks and green spaces, and they play an invaluable part in helping our communities flourish.”
Tonight, Church Square in Scunthorpe will join the likes of the White Cliffs of Dover and Salford’s Media City in turning their lights green to celebrate the Green Flag Awards.
Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “This recognises the hard work and dedication of many people who have stewarded these magnificent green spaces for the people of North Lincolnshire.
“Alongside these majestic places we are continuing our pledge to create a cleaner, greener North Lincolnshire as we lead the way in planting thousands of trees, developing an urban park in the heart of Scunthorpe and creating natural wildlife habitats in the town too.”
Keep Britain Tidy Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton OBE said: “This year, more than ever, our parks and green spaces have been a lifeline and we know that millions of people have used them to relax, meet friends, exercise or simply escape for a short time.”
“It is testament to the incredible dedication and hard work of parks staff and volunteers that, despite the challenges that went along with record numbers of visitors, North Lincolnshire Council has achieved the highest international standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”
