A new junction at the Scawby and Broughton crossroads will benefit from smart traffic lights to stop queues building up on the A18.
The new signals will respond to traffic in real time, giving priority to the busiest roads to keep traffic moving – and not hold drivers on a timer when there’s nothing waiting to come out.
Traffic heading east towards Brigg or west towards the motorway won’t be stopped unnecessarily, while still allowing drivers to enter and exit the junction safely from other roads.
Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “This was never about stopping traffic – it’s about managing it better and keeping motorists safer. Highways professionals know that these smart signals keep main routes moving while making the junction safer.”
Cllr Neil Poole, deputy leader and cabinet member for highways, added: “We know residents will be rightly concerned about delays. These signals are designed to improve safety and respond to traffic in real time, not slow it down unnecessarily.”
The smart signals form part of wider safety improvements at the crossroads, alongside resurfacing and improved lighting, all focused on reducing risk and making journeys more predictable.
